New Talavana Message Addition 2

I had been posting these things with regular messages to the New Talavana forum.  Somehow the YahooGroups system started saying the messages were too big or too long.  Therefore, I am going to try to include this information on these pages rather than on the regular posting by email.
Thanks to everyone for the continued encouragements regarding Krsna conscious Bhakti Yoga,

SB 9.24.65 — Kṛṣṇa’s face is decorated with ornaments, such as earrings resembling sharks. His ears are beautiful, His cheeks brilliant, and His smiling attractive to everyone. Whoever sees Lord Kṛṣṇa sees a festival. His face and body are fully satisfying for everyone to see, but the devotees are angry at the creator for the disturbance caused by the momentary blinking of their eyes.

regarding the Maha Mantra:

[ As far as I know Bhaktivinode Thakur is believed to be a gopi from the spiritual world.  Most, if not all of the famous and revered Six Gosvamis chanted the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra for many hours every day.  And, most, if not all of the six gosvamis were considered incarnations of Gopis from the spiritual world.    Therefore, chanting the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra is not necessarily only for those on a lower Rasa such as Santa.  However, the very great souls and Mahajanas Sri Narada and the Four Kumaras are ordinarily considered to be in Santa Rasa.  Achieving Santa Rasa is considered very important stage in devotional advancement.

So far as I have seen, those who do not have the benefit of living near a Hare Krsna temple may find chanting rounds of the Hare Krsna Maha Mantra a serious challenge.  It can also be very difficult to chant rounds of Hare Krsna and still compete for survival in most areas of society.  If we cannot move to a Holy place like Vrndaban we need to make a serious effort to plan out a simple life that is adequate regarding bodily needs.

Here at New Talavana we have made strides to establish agricultural self-sufficiency.  However, we have a long way to go before we can claim we are deriving everything we need from the land.  We are still in need of dedicated ox trainers.  ]

3 Modes of Material Nature

Chapter Fourteen: The Three Modes of Material Nature

SB 11.25: The Three Modes of Nature and Beyond

[Material necessities are quite sufficiently provided for in the knowledge given in the Vedic literatures, which offer a program for good living and gradual elevation to the platform of sattva-guna, the mode of goodness. Once one is situated in sattva-guna, one’s knowledge expands. On the platform of passion there is no knowledge, for passion is an impetus to enjoy material benefits. On the platform of ignorance there is neither knowledge nor enjoyment but simply animalistic living.]

[It is not a fact that because one is born in a brahmana family he is automatically a brahmana. He has a better chance to become a brahmana, but unless he meets all the brahminical qualifications, he cannot be accepted as such. On the other hand, if the brahminical qualifications are found in the person of a sudra, he should immediately be accepted as a brahmana. To substantiate this there are many quotations from Bhagavatam, Mahabharata, Bharadvaja-samhita and the pancaratra, as well as many other scriptures.]

[Learn to follow the four regulative principles namely: no meat-eating, no illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling; study authorized Vaisnava Sastra daily; chant and meditate on the Holy Names of God every day.  In this way we will certainly be making advancement to level of Brahmana.]

[Even a sudra can understand what is Brahman, and in that case he becomes a brahmana automatically. It is necessary that one hear attentively. That is all.]

Varnasrama Dharma
“God Centered”

Bg 18.41 — Brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras are distinguished by the qualities born of their own natures in accordance with the material modes, O chastiser of the enemy.

Bg 18.42 — Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness – these are the natural qualities by which the brāhmaṇas work.

Bg 18.43 — Heroism, power, determination, resourcefulness, courage in battle, generosity and leadership are the natural qualities of work for the kṣatriyas.

[There is a need to be cautious about reviving ancient standards regarding Varnasrama Dharma.  Some of the ancient standards were very strict and some things only the great souls of ancient times could accomplish.

Some devotees who are adventurous may be interested to look into wilderness or forest survival.  Or, at least, look into living more off-the-grid.

I do not know of any ISKCON centers that have a full program to train Vaisnava Ksatriyas or Vaisnava Vaisyas.  Some may have to consider participating in mainstream educational programs for specialized training.  ]

The Gates to Hell

[The Lord, however, can fulfill all desires, and the Lord, being neutral to everyone, does not interfere with the desires of the minute independent living entities. However, when one desires Krsna, the Lord takes special care and encourages one to desire in such a way that one can attain to Him and be eternally happy. The Vedic hymns therefore declare, esa u hy eva sadhu karma karayati tam yam ebhyo lokebhya unninisate. esa u evasadhu karma karayati yam adho ninisate: “The Lord engages the living entity in pious activities so that he may be elevated. The Lord engages him in impious activities so that he may go to hell.” (Kausitaki Upanisad 3.8)

“The living entity is completely dependent in his distress and happiness. By the will of the Supreme he can go to heaven or hell, as a cloud is driven by the air.”

Divine or Demoniac?

Bg 16.1-3 — The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity; nonviolence; truthfulness; freedom from anger; renunciation; tranquillity; aversion to faultfinding; compassion for all living entities; freedom from covetousness; gentleness; modesty; steady determination; vigor; forgiveness; fortitude; cleanliness; and freedom from envy and from the passion for honor – these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature.

Bg 16.4 Pride, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance – these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature, O son of Pṛthā.

CC Madhya 22.75 — “A Vaiṣṇava is one who has developed all good transcendental qualities. All the good qualities of Kṛṣṇa gradually develop in Kṛṣṇa’s devotee.

[We may be born with inclinations, more or less, in the lower modes of nature “rajas and tamas”.  Even the mode of goodness in material existence “sattva guna” can be tainted with the lower modes of nature.

Until we are completely situated in the higher levels of spiritual advancement with Krsna conscious Bhakti Yoga – we will probably have to be mindful of our actions in mind, words, or body.  We should not give unnecessary trouble in mind, words, or body even to an insect.

Of course, when we have some business like ksatriya, vaisya or sudra we will have to do the best we can with these injunctions.  It is the Vaisnava Brahmanas and Vaisnava Sannyasis that may make it more their business to be really perfect about not giving trouble to any living entity. ]

The Bona Fide
Spiritual Master

SB 11.3.23 — [A sincere disciple should learn to dissociate the mind from everything material and positively cultivate association with his spiritual master and other saintly devotees. He should be merciful to those in an inferior position to him, cultivate friendship with those on an equal level and meekly serve those in a higher spiritual position. Thus he should learn to deal properly with all living beings. ]

One should offer obeisances before all …

SB 11.29.16 — Disregarding the ridicule of one’s companions, one should give up the bodily conception and its accompanying embarrassment. One should offer obeisances before all — even the dogs, outcastes, cows and asses — falling flat upon the ground like a rod.

Part 45

CC Antya 20.21 — “ ‘One who thinks himself lower than the grass, who is more tolerant than a tree, and who does not expect personal honor but is always prepared to give all respect to others can very easily always chant the holy name of the Lord.’

CC Antya 20.22 — “These are the symptoms of one who chants the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. Although he is very exalted, he thinks himself lower than the grass on the ground, and like a tree, he tolerates everything in two ways.

CC Antya 20.23 — “When a tree is cut down, it does not protest, and even when drying up, it does not ask anyone for water.

CC Antya 20.24 — “The tree delivers its fruits, flowers and whatever else it possesses to anyone and everyone. It tolerates scorching heat and torrents of rain, yet it still gives shelter to others.

CC Antya 20.25 — “Although a Vaiṣṇava is the most exalted person, he is prideless and gives all respect to everyone, knowing everyone to be the resting place of Kṛṣṇa.

CC Antya 20.26 — “If one chants the holy name of Lord Kṛṣṇa in this manner, he will certainly awaken his dormant love for Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet.”

Understanding our relationship with God…

(I am just trying to itemize the essentials of a soul’s different levels of relationship with God.  This understanding of Rasa is very important in the Vaisnava or Hare Krishna faith, philosophy, and theology.
God comes as “death” to the atheists.

It is described in the “Teachings of Lord Caitanya” – presented by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada – that the demons or asuras were experiencing a “ghastliness” or “devastation” rasa relationship with God.  Therefore, it seems that all souls are in a “Rasa” relationship with God whether trapped in the cycle of Samsara “birth and death” or eternally liberated.

The question remains how much can a soul advance to higher levels of Rasa relationship with God?

*We can fear God as death or we can fear God for punishment we may deserve for some kind of sin.

*We can think of God as Almighty which is similar or related to fear.

The next level appears to be Santa Rasa.  Santa Rasa is a neutral level of realization of God.  We can find some details about Santa Rasa in Sri Caitanya Caritamrta as follows.  :

“It is true that whatever relationship a particular devotee has with the Lord is the best for him; still, when we study all the different methods from a neutral position, we can understand that there are higher and lower degrees of love.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => Madhya 8.83

“It is the nature of santa-rasa that not even the smallest intimacy exists. Rather, knowledge of impersonal Brahman and localized Paramatma is prominent.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => Madhya 19.218

The Rasa level higher than Santa Rasa is Dasya Rasa.

[On the platform of dasya-rasa, the greatest quantity of awe and veneration of the Supreme Lord is exhibited. That is, in the dasya-rasa, the greatness of the Supreme Lord is appreciated. It should be noted here that on the platform of santa-rasa there is no spiritual activity, but on the platform of dasya-rasa, service begins. Thus in the dasya-rasa the quality of the santa-rasa is exhibited, and, in addition, there is consciousness of the transcendental taste of service.]

Hare Krsna!

Please accept my humble obeisances and dandavats!

All glories to Srila Prabhupada
and all pure devotees of the Supreme Personality of Godhead!

I am so fortunate to be in the association of the great souls who are with the New Talavana Hare Krsna Farming Community!

Please let me know how I may better serve the transcendental Mission of the New Talavana Hare Krsna Farming Community a major center for Krsna consciousness and Bhakti Yoga.

These great souls tower above me like skyscrapers while I am lower than the worms since I am like unto the plants, trees and stones.

Please let the kitchen management and the temple management know if you will be bringing a number of people for any particular time or day.    There is room for children to play games on the lawn.  If you can get in touch with the devotees who manage the kitchen perhaps there could be some arrangement for extra prasadam.

There is also a new light show on the steeple of the Temple building at New Talavana.  Somehow the devotees managed to put Holiday lights on the steeple.  I think we are getting blessed just by looking at these Holiday lights on top of the temple building.

These lights can be seen from the street in front of the main temple area at New Talavana.  If you are interested you can park your car so that you can glance at the lights sometimes while taking prasadam – sitting in your vehicle.  Please check with the pujaris to find out if the lights will be turned on.

I am guessing how much it costs to keep the holiday lights on through the night over the temple building.  Could it cost $1-$3 per day?  This would then cost $30 to $90 per month.  Please check with the New Talavana Temple management if you know someone who can help with funding to keep the holiday lights on through the night.

Yogindra Prabhu says he has so much service on the altar it has not always been easy to attend to things around the New Talavana kitchen and other concerns.  All competent pujaris please contact Yogindra Prabhu if you can somehow afford to lend a hand with pujari services.  601-337-2224

(Check with Yogindra Prabhu to see if he changed his email address.  He listed in a recent publication as his email address.)

Tapah Punja Prabhu is probably always needing help in the garden.  Please contact him regarding the volunteer program.  Get hands-on gardening experience.

For the time being the ISKCON management here at New Talavana has requested me to post the following statement. :

[The expressed views & opinions are those of Christopher J. Flores aka Dandavats dasa and do not represent ISKCON nor its line of disciplic succession in any official capacity other than as a follower & devotee trying his best to present the pure message of Godhead.]

ei panca-tattva-rupe sri-krsna-caitanya

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His associates of the Panca-tattva distributed the holy name of the Lord to invoke love of Godhead throughout the universe, and thus the entire universe was thankful.

>>> Ref. VedaBase => Adi 7.163

[Drawn irresistibly into discussion, Abhay spoke up in answer to the words Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta had so tersely spoken in the first seconds of their meeting. “Who will hear your Caitanya’s message?” Abhay queried. “We are a dependent country. First India must become independent. How can we spread Indian culture if we are under British rule?”

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati’s reply:
Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta continued: Whether one power or another ruled was a temporary situation; but the eternal reality is Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and the real self is the spirit soul. No man-made political system, therefore, could actually help humanity. This was the verdict of the Vedic scriptures and the line of spiritual masters. Although everyone is an eternal servant of God, when one takes himself to be the temporary body and regards the nation of his birth as worshipable, he comes under illusion. The leaders and followers of the world’s political movements, including the movement for svarāj, were simply cultivating this illusion. Real welfare work, whether individual, social, or political, should help prepare a person for his next life and help him reestablish his eternal relationship with the Supreme.]

I take it from this story that there is anxiety to convert people to the cult of Bhakti worldwide.  It might be interesting to go over the details of the historical situation each year during Srila Prabhupada’s life and the history of ISKCON.  However, there are some essentials to be faced regarding our current situation and this is relevant for future plans.

So far the situation is that only the certain few will be able to maintain Srila Prabhupada’s standard established for ISKCON.

The basic ISKCON standard is as follows.  :

Following four regulative principles strictly and sincerely:

*No meat eating (No meat, fish, or eggs  Garlic and Onions are also considered somewhat tamasic and devotees normally avoid these items as food.)

*No illicit sex (At least sex only in marriage with the greatest ideal sex only for religious and spiritual conception of children)

*No intoxication (No illegal intoxication, no legal intoxication, and even no caffeine;  I have never seen injunctions in ISKCON teachings against ginseng.  However, some devotees may feel ginseng could also serve as some kind of aphrodisiac and so should also be avoided if ginseng creates problems for our spiritual life.

The devotees normally become enthusiastic to serve and contribute to prove their gratitude to Srila Prabhupada.  Consequently, there should be the achievement of the realization that caffeine and other stimulants should not be required.  )

*No gambling (There are different types of gambling.  Gambling as in a casino; sometimes business dealings can be like gambling; business scheming; business speculations; and too much philosophical speculation – should all be avoided.)

More on Four Regulative Principles:
And:Chanting Sixteen rounds Hare Krsna Maha Mantra

In ISKCON the devotees promise to follow these two items every day as mentioned above.  This is following four regulative principles and chanting 16 rounds.

There are a few more items that devotees probably should adopt if possible.  They are as follows.

*Morning devotional observances or morning program

*Study of authorized Vaisnava teachings such as Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam

If we can follow these items keeping within ISKCON standards then we are certainly blessed.  Some may need help with one or more of these items.  There may be help from devotees with things like this sometimes.  There is a need to follow these standards strictly enough to reside in an ISKCON center.  There is a need to be very certain we are prepared to keep with the essential standards if we hope to achieve Diksa, spiritual initiation.

Please check with ISKCON management regarding your rights, privileges, opportunities, responsibilities, and requirements for spiritual initiation and participation in ISKCON center programs.

We are so indebted to all Vaisnava devotees, the Guru Parampara, Srila Prabhupada and all followers of Srila Prabhupada – in so many ways.  The devotees are always serving and contributing however possible to show their gratitude for so much opportunity in spiritual life.

At the New Talavana Hare Krsna Farming Community there are buses that pick up children for kindergarten, grammar school, and high school.  There is also a community college in Poplarville if someone would like to work on more specialized skills.  Check with Tapah Punja Prabhu’s program to see about hands-on skills with gardening.  Also, contact New Talavana if you are interested in training oxen.
